plot twist

ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter are reporting the the San Francisco 49ers have entered the Peyton Manning sweepstakes. In fact, Peyton has already worked out for 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh and taken a physical for the team! This certainly adds an interesting wrinkle to the NFL offseason's most fascinating subplot.

Personally, I'm of course most interested in how this impacts Tim Tebow. As I wrote last week, my ideal scenario is Manning signing with the Broncos, Alex Smith signing somewhere other than San Francisco, and the 49ers turning to Tebow as a better option than what they have/what's left on the free agent market. Manning to San Francisco makes sense in terms of the team being a contender and the offensive pieces already being in place, but it's hard to imagine Manning being, well... Manning, on what is a muddy, sloppy field in the Bay area. On the other hand, if ever there was an NFL quarterback who could be considered a mudder, it's Tebow.

Here's to hoping...
