I an effort to prove (mostly to myself) that I am not a blind Tim Tebow fanboy, here is my take on the Broncos' 38-24 win over the Oakland Raiders yesterday...
John Fox and Denver's offensive coaching staff, after seemingly taking an extra two weeks off of work after the bye, showed up to do their jobs this week. Resulting, Tebow looked much improved quarterbacking his team in Sunday's division clash in Oakland. The scheme made sense - something it did not do, especially last week against the Lions - and they put Tebow in positions to make plays.
Tebow played well, but was still inconsistent. His 10-21 stat line should have been better as there were two or three passes he threw that his receivers should have caught. There were also two or three passes he threw that were wildly inaccurate. He has struggled throwing the 15-yard corner route to his left, missing a wide-open Julius Thomas on one such route Sunday. But he also threw some nice passes over the middle and on the move, and the offense made an effective and intelligent use of his unique skill set.
The offensive line was awful, and Tebow was hit on almost every pass attempt. But unlike prior weeks, he was able to get the ball out of his hands and avoid taking a ton of sacks. He was also able to take care of the ball, not fumbling and not throwing any interceptions. However, he failed to manage the play clock on several occasions.
Currently, Tebow is a quarterback who can manage a game and make plays when he needs to. If he is able to build on the success of yesterday and start completing a higher percentage of his pass attempts and increase his awareness of the play clock, he can be a winning quarterback in the NFL. The key for him is consistency - to limit his poor throws and make positive plays, both with his arm and legs, on a more consistent basis. It's a challenge both Tebow and Denver coaches need to face together. Regardless of whether or not he is able, there's no doubt Tebow will commit himself to improving. After yesterday, I'm less suspicious that the Broncos coaches will give less than their best efforts.
