What in the Broncos is going on out there?

I didn't get to watch the Broncos travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans this afternoon - I'm away from home and thus away from my DirectTV Sunday Ticket - but I don't need to have seen the game to read the recap, examine the box score and know that the Broncos' offense is anemic*.

*To be fair, the Titans' offense likewise suffers from an iron deficiency.

The best playmaker the Broncos have on the offensive side of the ball is backup (or third string) quarterback Tim Tebow. The Broncos need to find a way to get Tebow in the game and get the ball in his hands. It's clear to me that he should be their starting quarterback, but even if that isn't clear to their coaching and personnel staffs, they need to find creative ways of getting their best player on the field, putting the ball in his hands, and allowing him to make plays. The Broncos will continue to struggle on third downs and in the red zone until they do.

Tebow is a unique athlete at the quarterback position and needs to be utilized as a run/pass threat in short yardage and scoring situations. He's hard to gameplan and prepare for - Kyle Orton is not. John Fox and company need to go back and watch some Pittsburgh game film from the early/mid 1990s. They need to study how the Steelers were able to involve then backup quarterback Kordell Stewart as a wide receiver and part-time QB in order to make their offense more explosive. Tebow is different from Stewart and has a different skill set, but he can be used in similar ways in similar situations as Stewart was early in his career.

I understand why the Broncos' brass is reluctant to put Tebow on the field - using him periodically in games will only fan the flames of fan outrage over him not being the teams' starting QB. But not using him and allowing their offense to stagnate isn't going to douse any fires either. Tebow is a gamer and Sundays are gamedays. If you want to win, you need to play your best - it's time Denver started doing that.
